A Fusion of Past and Future
The vision of blending the modern with the traditional – past with future – is fully realized at the Heritage & Resort Hotel Monumenti, where historical architecture meets contemporary design in perfect harmony.
Massive stone façades and restored wooden details seamlessly complement sleek glass surfaces that offer sea views from nearly every corner. The interiors feature soft pastel tones and thoughtful details that tell the story of Pula’s military and maritime heritage.
The hotel is located on the grounds of a former Austro-Hungarian military barracks, meticulously renovated in accordance with heritage conservation guidelines. Adding special value to the complex is the former Officers’ Garden – now transformed into a tranquil green oasis with fountains, gazebos, and lush floral arrangements.
A Living History
The island of Sveta Katarina and the Monumenti Peninsula were the cradle of Croatian military aviation more than 110 years ago.
During the Austro-Hungarian era, Croats led the development of the military air force, and the first base for seaplanes and submarines was established right here, on the present site of Marina Polesana.
In 1912, the first test flight of a seaplane piloted by a Croatian aviator was recorded – right here on Sveta Katarina. That same year, a Croatian officer was appointed commander of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force.
This area became a hub for building seaplanes, aircraft, submarines, even hovercrafts, as well as some of the largest radio transmitters in Europe. Sveta Katarina was a key strategic point.
The island separates Pula Bay from the island of St. Andrew and is connected by a bridge to the Monumenti Peninsula. During the former Yugoslavia, the area was home to the navy, educational institutions, diving units, and the naval infantry command. Nearly the entire bay was a military zone – until recently, when demilitarization opened up new possibilities the city had never known.
From Turbulent History to a Modern Destination
The city has finally reunited with its coastline. The Katarina–Monumenti military complex is no longer what it once was: from discipline to relaxation, from command to calm, from control to complete serenity.
Despite the transformation, the historic buildings remain under strict heritage protection – any modifications require expert approval. The investor has carefully preserved the spirit of the past, integrating this proud history into every corner of the hotel.
To remind you. To tell the story. To proudly and clearly say: this is living history.
